또 다른 여자 이야기

a little while ago i started seeing another woman. actually, it was my wife’s idea.
얼마 전 나는 아내가 아닌 다른 여인을 만나러 갔다. 실은 내 아내의 권유였다.

“you know you love her,” she told me one day, completely out of the blue.
“life’s short, you should give her more of your time.”
어느 날, 뜻밖에도 아내가 내게 말했다. "당신 그녀를 사랑하잖아요,
인생은 짧아요, 당신 그녀와 더 많은 시간을 보내야 해요."

“but i love you, dear,” i replied. “i know, but you love her too!” she said.
"근데 여보, 난 당신을 사랑해" 라고 대답하자 아내는 말했다. "알아요, 그렇지만 당신은 그녀도 사랑하잖아요."

the other woman whom my wife wanted me to see was my mother.
she had been a widow for a few years now, and because of work and my kids, i didn’t get to see her very often. i called my mother that night and asked her to join me for a movie and some dinner.
내 아내가 만나라고 한 다른 여자는 실은 내 어머니였다.
미망인이 되신지 벌써 몇 년. 일과 애들 핑계로 어머니를 자주 찾아 뵙지 못했다.
그날 밤, 나는 어머니께 전화를 걸어 같이 영화도 보고 저녁이나 하자고 제안했다.

“did something happen? is anything wrong?” she asked.
"무슨 일이라도 생긴 거냐? 혹시 나쁜 일은 아니지?"

you see, my mother belongs to the generation that thinks that any phone call after 7 pm can only mean bad news…
알다시피 내 어머니 세대는 저녁 7시가 지나서 걸려오는 전화는 모두 나쁜 소식일 거라고 믿는 세대다.

“i just wanted to invite you for dinner and a movie, just the two of us. what do you think?”
"그냥 엄마하고 단 둘이 저녁도 먹고 영화도 보고 싶어서요. 괜찮겠어요?"

after a few second, my mother simply said: “i’d like that…”
잠시 후 어머니가 덤덤하게 말씀하셨다. "그러자꾸나.."

i drove the next evening after work to pick her up.
it was a friday night, and i had a feeling i hadn’t had in a long time
– the kind of nervousness you get before a first date.
다음 날 저녁, 일이 끝나고 차를 몰고 어머니를 모시러 갔다.
금요일 밤이었고 나는 오랫동안 느껴보지 못한 기분에 휩싸였다.
첫데이트를 하기 전에 갖게 되는 가슴 두근거림이라고나 할까.

when i got there, i saw that my mother was also excited and nervous.
she was waiting outside, wearing her beautiful old coat, her hair all done up
and had the dress she wore for her and dad’s last anniversary.
her face was lit up with a bright smile.
도착해 보니 어머니도 다소 들떠있는 모습이었다. 집앞에 나와 기다리고 계셨는데, 근사한 옛 코트를 걸치고, 머리도 다듬으신 모양이었다. 코트 안의 옷은 아버지가
돌아가시기 전 두 분의 마지막 결혼기념일에 입으셨던 것이다.
어머니의 얼굴이 환한 미소로 활짝 피어났다.

“i told my girlfriends i’m going on a date with my son tonight and they were very excited for me!” she told me when she got in the car.
어머니는 차에 오르시며 내게 말씀하셨다.
"친구들에게 오늘 밤에 아들과 데이트하러 간다고 했더니 모두들 자기들 일인양 들떠있지 뭐냐"

the restaurant we went to was not the fanciest, but the staff were incredibly friendly. my mother held my arm and looked like the first lady!
we sat down, and she asked me to read her the menu (“my eyes are not what they used to be” she said).
어머니와 함께 간 식당은 최고로 멋진 곳은 아니었지만 종업원들은 기대 이상으로
친절했다. 어머니가 내 팔을 끼었다. 대통령 영부인이라도 되신 것 같았다.
자리에 앉자 어머니가 메뉴를 읽어 달라고 하셨다. ("내 눈이 옛날 같지가 않구나")

halfway through, i looked up and saw she was staring at me with a nostalgic smile on her face.
메뉴를 반쯤 보다 눈을 들어 보니 어머니가 향수에 젖은 미소로 나를 빤히 쳐다보고 계셨다.

“when you were a child, i was the one who read you the menu.”
"네가 어렸을 때는 내가 너한테 메뉴를 읽어 줬는데"

“then allow me to return the favor, mom”, i said.
"오늘은 내가 읽어드릴게 엄마."

we had a lovely conversation, not about anything in particular, just sharing what’s going on in our lives and eventually we spoke so much that the conversation just trailed off…
그날 밤 우린 즐거운 대화를 나누었다. 특별한 주제도 아니고 그저 일상적인
이야기였다. 끊임없이 이야기를 나누다보니 마침내 대화의 밑천이 바닥이 났다...

“i’ll go out with you again, but only if you let me pay next time!” my mother said.
"다음에 또 오자꾸나. 단 다음 번은 내가 낸다는 조건이야."

when i dropped her off at her house, i felt genuinely sorry to see her leave.
i hugged and kissed her and told her how much i loved her.
어머니를 다시 댁에 모셔다 드렸다. 헤어지려니 발이 떨어지지 않았다.
어머니를 안고 볼에 키스하며 내가 그녀를 얼마나 사랑하는 지 말씀드렸다.

when i came home later that night, my wife asked how the date went.
그날밤 집에 도착하자 아내가 데이트가 어땠냐고 물었다.

“it was wonderful, thank you for suggesting it!” i looked at my wife and added
"멋진 저녁이었어. 그렇게 하게 말해줘서 고마워." 아내에게 감사의 말을 전했다.

“much better than i could ever have imagined
"정말이지 기대 이상이었어."

a few days later, my dear mother passed away from a heart-attack.
it was very quick and there was nothing anyone could do.

며칠 후 사랑하는 어머니가 심장마비로 돌아가셨다. 너무 순식간이었고 어찌
해볼 도리가 없었다.

a short time afterwards, i got a letter from the restaurant we went to that last time.
시간이 조금 흐른 후, 어머니와 내가 함께 했던 식당에서 편지가 도착했다.

i’m quite sure that i won’t be able to make it to our next date,
so you and your wife can enjoy each other’s company like i did with you.
i paid for your next meal here in full
and i want you to know just how much that night meant to me! i love you, mother
아무래도 다음 번 데이트 약속은 지킬 수 없을 것 같구나. 정말 그럴 것 같다.
그러니 이번엔 너와 네 아내 둘이서 너와 내가 했던 것처럼 함께 즐겼으면 한다.
너희 식사 비용은 내가 미리 다 지불했다.
그리고 너와 내가 함께 했던 그날이 내겐 얼마나 뜻깊은 일이었는지 네가 알아주기
바란다! 사랑한다!! 엄마가

at that moment, i understood just how important it is that we let our loved ones know that we love them, and make sure we make time for them – we don’t know how long we’ll have them in our lives. nothing is more important in this life than family!
그 순간 나는 깨달았다. 우리가 사랑하는 사람에게 그 사람을 사랑하고 있음을 알게 하는 것과 그 사람을 위해 시간을 내는 것이 얼마나 중요한가를 - 우리는 우리가 사랑하는 사람들이 얼마나 오랜동안 우리와 함께 할 것인지 모르고 있다.
이 세상을 살아가는데 있어서 가족보다 더 중요한 것은 아무 것도 없다.

if your mother is still alive – appreciate her. if she isn’t – remember her. either way, send this to others and help them remember just how much their mothers mean to them.
만약 당신의 어머니가 아직 살아 계시다면 - 어머니에게 감사하세요. 만약 안 계시다면 - 어머니를 기억하세요.
그 어느 경우에든 이 글을 다른 사람들에게 보내 그들의 어머니가 그들에게 얼마나 많은 것을 의미하는 지 기억하게끔 도와 주기 바란다.

you just might inspire them to call their mother, because time is the one thing we can never get back…
그러면 당신은 바로 그들이 어머니를 찾아뵐 수 있도록 강하게 자극할 수 있을 것이다. 왜냐하면 시간은 결코 되돌려 받을 수 없는 것이기에...
