한글은 단어에 음절과 강세가 없이 처음부터 끝까지 억양의 높낮이가 같다.

영어는 단어에 따라 억양에 높고 낮음과, 길고 짧음이 있다.

1) 음절(syllable) :

두 음절 이상 단어는 억양이 높고 낮은 부분이 있어 각 부분을 음절이라고 하며

높게 읽는 부분을 강음절, 그렇지 않는 부분을 약 음절이라 한다.

음절의 숫자는 발음이 되는 모음의 숫자가 된다.

2) 강세(accent) :

두 음절 이상 단어에서 어떤 음절은 더 힘을 줘 읽는 것을 강세라 한다.

1차 강세 : ( ́) =우측에서 좌측으로, 2차 강세 : ( ̀) =좌측에서 우측으로 표기

두 음절 이상 단어에 한 번 또는 두 번 강세가 오는 경우도 있다.

3) 영한사전과 미국사전의 음절과 강세 표기 비교

영한 : af.ter.noon / æ̀ftǝrnú:n /

음절 표기가 단어엔 있고 발음부호엔 없다.

강세는 해당 모음 위에 한다.

1차 강세 : ( ́ ) = 우측에서 좌측으로,

2차 강세 : ( ̀ ) = 좌측에서 우측으로

미국 : af.ter.noon / af ́ ter nün ́/

단어에 음절 표기가 있고 발음부호엔 음절별 간격을 두고

강세는 음절의 끝에 하면서

1차 강세는 2차 강세와 구분이 되게 크게 또는 진하게 표기 한다.

단어는 고(강음절) 저(약음절)와 장(길게 발음) 단(짧게 발음)이 생명이고

문장은 음조(억양/intonation)가 생명이다.

이런 것들이 지켜지지 않으면 한국의 초등생 글 읽기와 같이 된다.

또한 이런 게 콩글리쉬가 된다.

이 책의 모든 단어에 음절과 강세 표기는 미국식 기준으로 하고

발음부호는 영한사전의 부호 그대로 인용하였다.

학습자는 영한사전을 쓰기 때문에 국제기호를 알아야 할 필요가 없다.
